Construction Begins for Wavecrest California Coastal Trail Expansion in Half Moon Bay

Construction for the Wavecrest California Coastal Trail Expansion is set to commence on Monday, July 31, 2025. This project aims to enhance access to the coastal trail while ensuring the preservation of the natural beauty and diverse wildlife found in the area.

Located along the stunning San Mateo Coast, the Wavecrest Open Space is recognized for its sweeping ocean views and rich ecological significance. A highlight of the area is the peaceful Bird Trail, a 1/3-mile segment of the California Coastal Trail that attracts many outdoor enthusiasts searching for scenic views and nature experiences.

This expansion project has garnered support from the Coastside Land Trust, local partners, and community members, showcasing the collaborative effort involved in the planning and execution stages. Key to the project is a focus on improving trail amenities and safety for visitors, all while maintaining the area’s natural environment.

The construction process will kick off with a preconstruction kickoff meeting held in cooperation with the City of Half Moon Bay. This meeting aims to prepare for the various stages involved in the construction and enhancement of the trail.

In line with environmental preservation, the project includes environmental awareness training for the construction team and conducting baseline wildlife surveys. These surveys will identify critical habitats such as nesting areas for birds and woodrat nests, ensuring that wildlife is protected throughout the construction phases.

As part of the ecological restoration effort, native seed collection is already underway. This initiative focuses on gathering local species like Choris’s popcorn flower, bee plant, and soap plant, which are crucial for restoring habitats affected by previous disturbances.

The first phase of construction will involve clearing a new parking area that will serve as the main staging zone for construction materials and equipment. In this way, the project can specifically address community needs while improving the natural landscape.

To safeguard the local wildlife during construction, an on-site biologist will be present to monitor activities and ensure that best practices are followed. The construction team is also committed to creating designated gravel trails and parking lots in conjunction with ongoing restoration efforts to minimize environmental impact.

Collaboration among community members and city staff has been instrumental in shaping the plans for the coastal trail improvements. The enhancements will lead to the development of safer beach access points, improved amenities, and effective habitat restoration efforts aimed at controlling erosion.

Recent adjustments to the parking plan resulted in a reduction from three parking lots with an original capacity of 80 spaces down to two lots with 35 spaces and an additional 10-space reserve. These changes are intended to mitigate traffic concerns while still serving the community effectively.

In undertaking this project, informal trails and the newly designated parking area will be restored to their native habitats to help alleviate ongoing erosion issues in the region. Two planned beach access stairways are also set to provide safe entry points for the public while effectively managing high tide impacts.

An innovative walking bridge will be constructed to connect wetland areas along the trail while preserving native habitats. This thoughtful design will further enhance the overall experience for visitors to the area.

The Coastside Land Trust played a pivotal role in this project by receiving 12 parcels of land from Half Moon Bay at no cost, significantly aiding in the coastal trail extension. Moreover, the land trust acquired nine parcels for $79,743 aimed at advancing habitat restoration efforts.

With construction and restoration efforts underway, the goal is not only to improve accessibility to Wavecrest but also to maintain it as a cherished destination for future generations. As the construction progresses, visitors can eagerly anticipate the enhancements that will make this coastal area even more inviting and enjoyable.
