San Diego County has earned the prestigious title of 2025 California Owner of the Year, an honor conferred by an esteemed industry publication for its outstanding performance in delivering capital projects. This recognition is particularly noteworthy as it underscores the County’s commitment to fostering robust partnerships with contractors, marking it as a leader in the construction sector in California.
The annual award is aimed at acknowledging agencies that demonstrate excellence in managing capital projects while maintaining strong relationships with industry stakeholders. The General Services Director highlighted the County’s dedication to implementing alternative delivery methods, enhancing design elements thoughtfully, engaging communities in the planning process, and adhering to sustainable practices. Public art also played a significant role in the development of these projects, showcasing the County’s innovative approach.
Several public spaces within San Diego County were highlighted as key examples of this excellence. Four projects in particular stood out in the award documentation: the Borrego Springs Library, Ohio Street Probation, Southeastern Live Well Center, and the Public Health Lab. Each project reflects not only architectural integrity but also community involvement and sustainable strategies.
Among these projects, the Southeastern Live Well Center is regarded as a leading example. Opened in 2023, this center serves as a one-stop shop that offers various social services to the community. It was developed through a collaborative effort involving local community members, businesses, and contractors throughout its design and construction phases. This collaborative spirit is a cornerstone of the County’s project planning methodology.
Engagement with community members was a crucial aspect of the Live Well Center project. Residents had the opportunity to help shape the decisions regarding the center’s color schemes, overall appearance, layout, and incorporated public artwork. Such involvement ensured that the center met resident expectations and enhanced the local neighborhood.
A noteworthy feature of the Live Well Center is the inclusion of amenities that were specifically requested by local residents, making the facility not just a service point, but also a cherished community space.
