Moorhead Prepares for Major Road Construction and Urban Revitalization

News Summary

Moorhead is set for significant road construction and urban development. Upcoming projects include the 11th Street Underpass and enhancements to I-94 and the Red River Bridge. Residents are advised to prepare for traffic disruptions while the old Moorhead Center Mall will be demolished for new developments. Public safety and emergency response improvements are also on the agenda as the city looks to revitalize the downtown area. MnDOT emphasizes safety as Minnesota’s 2025 construction season plans nearly 180 road and bridge projects state-wide.

Moorhead Gears Up for Significant Road Construction and Urban Development in 2025

The city of Moorhead, Minnesota, is bracing for major road construction projects and urban development initiatives that will commence in 2025. Recently, a public open house was held by the city and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to inform residents about the upcoming projects that are expected to bring both significant changes and challenges to local traffic.

Traffic Challenges Ahead

This year, residents should anticipate major traffic disruptions due to the ongoing projects. It is advisable for local residents to prepare ahead of time for the changes that will affect daily commutes. The most notable of these projects is the continued work on the 11th Street Underpass, which is part of a substantial $115 million undertaking aimed at easing congestion caused by heavy train traffic that regularly disrupts local roadways.

Underpass and Bridge Renovations

As weather conditions improve, full operational work on the 11th Street Underpass is expected to resume, building on the winter work that established the foundation for the project. In addition, MnDOT plans to upgrade sections of I-94 and resurface the Red River Bridge, with the project anticipated to cost around $3 million. Officials have assured residents that traffic impacts from these upgrades will be minimal, as most of the work is scheduled for nighttime hours.

Redevelopment in Downtown

A significant change coming to the heart of Moorhead is the anticipated demolition of the old Moorhead Center Mall. This will make way for new commercial and residential developments, marking a transformational period for the downtown area. The reconstruction of the mall is projected to take between 1.5 to 2 years. Although the mall will be cleared away, the existing parking deck next to the former Herberger’s store will remain intact and integrated into the new development plans.

Enhancing Emergency Response Times

These infrastructure changes, including the underpass and mall redevelopment, are expected to improve emergency response times for the nearby fire station. The goal is to revitalize downtown Moorhead, making it a more vibrant and accessible area for residents and visitors alike.

Traffic Disruptions Coming Soon

Starting June 2, Main Avenue in Downtown Moorhead will be closed from 10th to 12th Streets, significantly impacting traffic flow in the region. Additionally, First Avenue will also close between 8th and 12th Streets, potentially increasing vehicle traffic on Center Avenue. Residents are encouraged to plan alternate routes during this period to avoid delays.

Train Horns Resumed During Construction Hours

In light of the construction activities, MnDOT has reinstated train horns in the downtown quiet zone during the hours of 6 AM to 7 PM, from Monday through Friday. This measure is designed to ensure the safety of both construction workers and the general public as projects ramp up.

Statewide Construction Initiatives

While Moorhead prepares for its local projects, the state of Minnesota is gearing up for an extensive construction season in 2025, which includes nearly 180 planned road and bridge projects across the state. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure, increasing safety, and supporting job creation statewide. Notable projects will see work on reconstructing Highway 371 in Northern Minnesota and multiple bridge repairs throughout the Twin Cities metro area.

Prioritizing Safety in Work Zones

With construction activities increasing statewide, MnDOT emphasizes the importance of safety in work zones. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and remain vigilant as developments progress throughout Moorhead and beyond.
