An artistic rendering of the future Citadel headquarters tower, set to transform the Miami skyline.
Citadel has obtained FAA approval for its ambitious new 1,049-foot headquarters tower in Miami. This mixed-use development will feature over 1.4 million square feet of office space and a luxury hotel, transforming the Brickell skyline. Scheduled to begin construction soon, the project aims to enhance business growth in the area and strengthen Citadel’s presence in Miami’s financial sector.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted approval for Citadel’s ambitious plan to construct a 1,049-foot-tall supertall headquarters tower in Miami, marking a significant milestone for the project. With an extensive 1.7 million square feet of mixed-use space, this development will not only elevate Miami’s skyline but also transform the city’s financial landscape.
The tower, designed by the acclaimed architecture firm Foster + Partners, will feature a significant amount of office space, exceeding 1.4 million square feet. Alongside office facilities, it will house a 212-room hotel on its upper levels, catering to both business and leisure visitors.
In addition to the hotel and office spaces, the building will boast fine dining restaurants, a ballroom, event areas, and several other amenities. An impressive illuminated crown will top the structure, creating a distinctive landmark for the city, while a landscaped deck on the top floor will offer an enjoyable environment for occupants and visitors alike.
This ambitious project is a collaborative effort between Citadel and Related Companies, a prominent New York-based real estate firm. Currently, five levels of below-grade and podium back-of-house areas are planned, ensuring that all necessary infrastructure supports the tower’s functions.
In looking ahead, Citadel has plans for additional phases of development. These future efforts will incorporate more office space, residential units, and parking facilities, thereby creating a bustling community around the tower.
The design also takes into account public accessibility. A continuous public baywalk will run along the eastern edge of the property, encouraging community engagement and promoting pedestrian access to the waterfront.
While construction is expected to commence later this year, the process still requires several permits, and a contractor has yet to be named. Significantly, Citadel’s FAA application necessitated the use of three tower cranes, each nearly 1,300 feet tall, which will be the tallest approved construction structures in Miami’s history. Installation of these cranes is scheduled for this fall along the site’s east, west, and south sides.
The project also involves a robust team of engineers and architects, including AAI Architects as the architect of record, Thornton Tomasetti as the structural and resiliency engineer, Langan as the geotechnical engineer, and Kimley-Horn and Associates for civil and traffic engineering duties.
The site for this massive development was acquired by Ken Griffin for over $360 million in 2022. Prior to Citadel’s efforts, the location experienced several unsuccessful redevelopment proposals following the demolition of major structures in the early 1970s. Citadel’s relocation from Chicago to Miami serves as a crucial boost to the local financial district, driven by concerns surrounding public safety in Chicago and a favorable business climate in Miami.
The company currently employs around 450 staff members in Miami and is set to expand significantly at this new headquarters, having previously occupied four floors at the Southeast Financial Center in the city. Citadel is also driving operational expansions in New York and London as part of its growth strategy and has been active in real estate investments throughout the Brickell area.
