The Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage is embarking on a $257 million expansion to improve emergency services and address capacity issues. This project aims to increase patient care spaces and add behavioral health rooms, with construction expected to be completed by 2027. The expansion is prompted by a rise in emergency visits and the need for better surgical services due to growing community healthcare demands.
The Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) in Anchorage has initiated a significant expansion project valued at $257 million, with the primary focus on enhancing its emergency services. The development, authorized by the board of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), addresses the pressing issues of capacity and overcrowding within the hospital’s emergency department.
ANMC has been experiencing significant challenges in capacity due to a steadily increasing and aging population. Hospital administrator Alan Vierling stated that the facility has been overwhelmed by a high rate of admissions, which has led to the unfortunate cancellation of non-emergency surgeries. The surge in population has been notable, with an increase of 70,000 Alaska Native individuals since the hospital’s establishment in the early 1990s.
Many of the existing patient care spaces are inadequate, as patients sometimes find themselves receiving care in hallways rather than designated rooms, highlighting the urgent need for expansion. The forthcoming project will add 21 new rooms to the emergency department to boost its capacity to treat patients effectively.
The construction plans also include new behavioral health rooms, which aim to better serve patients facing mental health crises. An upgraded ambulance bay is on the agenda as well, designed to streamline emergency arrivals. The current ambulance bay’s single entry point has complicated deliveries, and the proposed enhancements are expected to facilitate quicker and more efficient service.
Additional improvements will be made to recovery areas for surgeries and spaces dedicated to behavioral health treatment. These changes aim to ensure that patients receive the comprehensive care they deserve in a dedicated and supportive environment.
Almost $30 million of the total funding for this expansion has been secured through congressionally directed spending, highlighting significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure in the region. The upcoming phase of the project will seek an additional $200 million to support the construction of three more floors, including plans for a helipad to improve patient transportation options.
The emergency department has witnessed a dramatic uptick in visits in recent years. In 2021, the facility saw around 45,000 patient visits, with that number increasing to almost 55,000 by 2023. Additionally, the hospital reported an increase of 2,000 surgeries in 2023 compared to the levels recorded in 2020. As a result, patients often endure longer stays due to insufficient bed availability in skilled nursing facilities across the state.
While the expansion is vital for improving patient care, it will inevitably disrupt some of the services at ANMC during construction. The entrance to the emergency department will be relocated, and certain parking areas will be temporarily closed to accommodate construction activities.
The first phase of the expansion is projected to be completed by 2027. Additionally, plans for a new skilled nursing facility are set to commence construction later this summer, with an expected completion by fall 2026. This new facility will further address the growing needs of the community and provide essential services amidst an expanding healthcare landscape.
The expansion plans reflect a commitment to improving healthcare services and ensuring that patients receive quality care in expanded and modern facilities. With the increasing demand for emergency and surgical services, the Alaska Native Medical Center’s investment into its future is a promising development for the community it serves.
