Volunteer Work Leads to Construction Career for EKU Senior

Esther Sadiki, a senior at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), has discovered her passion for construction management through volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. This hands-on experience not only ignited her interest in the field but also influenced her decision to enroll in EKU’s Construction Management program.

The EKU Construction Management program is designed to equip students with essential skills for managing multimillion-dollar job sites and understanding complex construction documents like blueprints. As a key component of the program, students engage in real-world training that prepares them for the challenges they will face in the construction industry.

EKU President David McFaddin highlighted the significance of the program, stating that it plays a crucial role in shaping the infrastructure of both the region and the state. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for construction managers is anticipated to grow by 9% through 2033, with salaries in the field exceeding $100,000.

Sadiki exemplifies the program’s commitment to student success as she currently serves as the president of the Student Contractors Association (SCA). In this role, she actively assists fellow students in finding internships and co-op experiences relevant to their field of study. Sadiki recently organized two volunteer events with Gray Construction for Habitat for Humanity, creating opportunities for students to participate in hands-on construction activities.

Through her involvement with the SCA, Sadiki secured her current internship as a field management intern with Gray Construction, following a successful interaction with a recruiter during one of the association’s events. Notably, EKU construction management students complete a minimum of three internships before graduating, ensuring they gain practical experience.

Sadiki’s journey into the construction management field began with a job site tour in her first construction management class at EKU. Since then, she has completed internships with Dean Builds in Lexington and Siemens in Louisville, allowing her to acquire valuable industry knowledge and confidence.

As she prepares for her graduation in December, Sadiki is currently studying for the Certified Associate Constructor (CAC) exam, which evaluates skills in construction project management and implementation. This certification is an important credential for anyone looking to advance in the construction management industry.

In addition to the CAC, all students enrolled in the EKU Construction Management program earn their OSHA – 30 certification, which focuses on workplace safety and hazard prevention. This emphasis on safety training is critical in an industry where risks can have significant consequences.

Dr. Justin Dodd, an associate professor at EKU, points out that an impressive 99% of graduates from the construction management program achieve job placement within three months of graduating. The combination of rigorous coursework and hands-on experiences prepares students to enter the workforce confidently.

The EKU Construction Management program not only aims to produce workforce-ready graduates but also emphasizes the importance of relevant industry certifications, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet industry demands upon graduation. As Sadiki demonstrates through her active role in the SCA and her several internships, the program is effectively bridging the gap between education and real-world practice, setting students up for successful careers in construction management.
