A glimpse of the ongoing bike trail construction project near Truckee, providing new recreational opportunities.
A new 51-mile bike-legal singletrack trail is being constructed near Truckee, California, as part of the East Zone Connectivity Project. This initiative aims to interlink Truckee with surrounding communities, promoting outdoor recreation and enhancing local economies in the Sierra Nevada region. The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship leads this effort with a substantial $10 million funding campaign, addressing challenges and sourcing community support through the ‘5 Bucks a Foot’ fundraising initiative.
A 51-mile bike-legal singletrack is currently under construction near Truckee, California, as part of the ambitious “East Zone Connectivity Project.” This new trail network is designed to connect Truckee with surrounding communities including Loyalton, Sierraville, Verdi, and Reno, Nevada. The initiative, being led by the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, aims to promote outdoor recreation while boosting local economies in the Sierra Nevada region.
The East Zone Connectivity Project is part of a broader initiative known as the Connected Communities Project, which plans to develop over 300 miles of new trails linking 15 rural communities in the Sierra Nevada. The overarching goal of this effort is to enhance local economies through recreational activities. To support this initiative, a substantial $10 million funding effort is currently underway.
The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship is committed to creating local job opportunities in areas such as planning, construction, and services while advocating for outdoor recreation and watershed stewardship. With the completion of environmental reviews for the East Zone project, construction is now progressing. So far, over 13 miles of trail have been completed in the Boca and Verdi Ridge sections.
This new trail network will be open to a variety of recreational users including non-motorized bikes, motorcycles, e-bikes, equestrians, hikers, and trail runners. Users can expect to enjoy breathtaking views of the Sierra Crest, Mount Rose Wilderness, and the city of Reno.
Constructing the trails has not been without its challenges. A particularly difficult half-mile section north of Verdi Peak presents steep slopes and large embedded boulders, substantially increasing construction costs. While the average cost of trail construction is approximately $5 per foot, this specific section could climb to as high as $45 per foot due to the complex nature of the terrain.
In light of these increased costs, a funding gap of $125,000 has been identified. Compounding this issue are delays in funding attributed to recent federal budget cuts, which have adversely affected trail maintenance across various regions. Currently, the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship manages around 300 miles of trails across four counties, and these budget limitations pose a significant challenge to maintaining and expanding this network.
To bridge the funding gap, a fundraising campaign dubbed “5 Bucks a Foot” has been initiated. This campaign is designed to encourage community participation in supporting the trail construction. As part of the fundraising effort, participants will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a custom Santa Cruz Hightower bike. The deadline to enter the raffle is August 12th, which adds an element of urgency for those interested in contributing to this vital project.
The East Zone Connectivity Project represents a significant leap forward in enhancing recreational opportunities in rural communities while addressing economic sustainability through outdoor activities. As construction continues and the community rallies to support this initiative, the potential for increased tourism and economic development in the Sierra Nevada region is promising. With a combination of community involvement, strategic planning, and dedicated funding efforts, the future of trails in the area looks bright.
